Itanagar DC Launches Eviction Drive to Beautify City; Weekly Markets Suspended

The Deputy Commissioner has also taken a strong stance on unregulated weekly markets operating across various parts of the capital.

In a major move to beautify the Itanagar Capital Region (ICR), Deputy Commissioner Talo Potom has launched a wide-reaching eviction and clean-up drive. The drive includes the removal of illegal hoardings placed along the Right of Way (ROW) of NH-415 and the issuance of notices to buildings constructed without valid permission, particularly those built after the cutoff date declared during the handover of the highway to the Highway Authority.

The Deputy Commissioner has also taken a strong stance on unregulated weekly markets operating across various parts of the capital. In a recently issued order, he directed the immediate suspension of all weekly markets within the ICR until further notice. The order cancels all permits and licenses previously issued to individuals, associations, or vendors for operating such markets.

Speaking to Northeast Live, DC Talo Potom assured that the administration would conduct hearings before carrying out any demolition. He said that the public’s opinions would be taken into account and assured that no individual would face injustice.

“The eviction drive is not just about removing encroachments, but also about making our capital cleaner and more organized. We are giving everyone a chance to be heard and ensuring fairness in our approach,” said DC Talo Potom.

The order, issued following a meeting chaired by the Home Minister of Arunachal Pradesh, stated, “In pursuance of the deliberations and decisions taken during the meeting chaired by the Hon’ble Minister (Home), Government of Arunachal Pradesh, it has been decided that all weekly markets being held within the administrative jurisdiction of the Itanagar Capital Region shall remain suspended until further notice.”

Accordingly, the administration has cancelled all market permits with immediate effect. The order clearly mentions that no weekly market will be allowed to operate in any sector, colony, or town within the ICR. Any violation of this directive will invite strict administrative and legal action under relevant laws.

To ensure the enforcement of this order, the Superintendent of Police (Itanagar and Naharlagun), the Executive Administrators of Itanagar and Naharlagun, and the Circle Officer of Banderdewa have been directed to ensure strict compliance.
