Gauhati University has entered the global 1201–1500 band and made an impressive debut in the THE Asia University Rankings 2025 at 351–400.

Gauhati University (GU), the oldest and one of the most prestigious institutions in North-East India, has earned a spot in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2025.

The university has entered the global 1201–1500 band and made an impressive debut in the THE Asia University Rankings 2025 at 351–400. Among Indian universities, GU now ranks 48th, the highest in the region marking a significant leap in its academic journey.

The announcement follows closely on the heels of GU’s 32nd Convocation held on 25 April. Vice-Chancellor Prof. Nani Gopal Mahanta described the achievement as “a collective victory for our students, faculty, and alumni,” adding that it validates GU’s recent academic reforms, including NEP-aligned curricula, digital governance initiatives, and a sharpened focus on research.

Over the past year, GU has accumulated a series of accolades. It secured an A+ grade from NAAC, ranked 13th among state universities in NIRF 2024, and earned ISO 9001:2015 certification. GU scholars feature in Stanford University’s list of the top 2% of scientists globally, and its Scopus h-index has reached an impressive 106.

The university has also strengthened its strategic partnerships. A 5G Use-Case Laboratory was inaugurated by the Union Minister for Communications, and new MoUs with TERI and NIELIT are enhancing research opportunities in climate science and emerging technologies. The GU–TERI Centre for Himalayan Studies is set to launch later this year.

Notably, GU has outperformed nearby Tezpur University in key THE metrics, especially teaching environment and research quality. “These results affirm our vision for interdisciplinary scholarship and global collaboration,” Prof. Mahanta stated, urging the academic community to nurture a vibrant research culture.

Established in 1948, GU now encompasses 49 departments, over 300 affiliated colleges, and more than 300,000 students. As it approaches its 80th year, GU’s global ranking milestone marks its transformation into an internationally recognized center of excellence.
