During the discussion, AIWPA President Jagdish Holkar proposed setting up a Mizoram Wine Board to lead the state's wine development efforts.
In a significant move that could reshape Mizoram’s economy and tourism sector, Chief Minister Lalduhoma on Tuesday met with officials from the All India Wine Producers Association (AIWPA) to discuss the development of a local wine industry.
The meeting came shortly after the Mizoram Legislative Assembly passed the Mizoram Liquor Prohibition Amendment Bill, 2025, which relaxes restrictions on wine-based beverages in the traditionally dry state. The amendment aims to unlock new economic opportunities through agro-tourism and fruit-based wine production.
During the discussion, AIWPA President Jagdish Holkar proposed setting up a Mizoram Wine Board to lead the state’s wine development efforts. He said the board could turn Mizoram into a rising tourist hotspot while boosting the local economy and creating new jobs.
Chief Minister Lalduhoma welcomed the idea and urged the AIWPA team to submit a detailed proposal. He highlighted the potential benefits for farmers and rural employment, noting the state’s abundance of fruits like grapes, banana, pineapple, dragon fruit, passion fruit, and kiwi. He said using these fruits for wine-making could help farmers earn better incomes.
AIWPA officials stressed that with proper processing facilities, Mizoram could become a leader in fruit wine production in India. They said the move would not only benefit farmers but also attract tourists and generate employment in the wine-making and processing industries.
Meanwhile, Agriculture Minister PC Vanlalruata announced that the state government would take steps to boost premium wine production using local agricultural and horticultural produce. Speaking at a national symposium on wine production held in Aizawl, Vanlalruata shared his optimism about the wine sector’s role in strengthening the state’s economy.
He said the government would focus on building the wine sector in harmony with Mizo cultural values while using modern processing technology to make high-quality wine from local fruits.
