Meghalaya Steps Up Border Surveillance Amid Security Concerns: Dy CM Tynsong

The Deputy Chief Minister also shed light on persistent land issues affecting fencing efforts along certain stretches of the border.

Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister in-charge of Home (Police), Prestone Tynsong, has confirmed intensified surveillance along the international border with Bangladesh, citing a fluid security scenario that demands constant vigilance. In collaboration with central agencies, particularly the Border Security Force (BSF), the state government is maintaining round-the-clock monitoring to prevent infiltration attempts.

Tynsong stated that top-level coordination is being carried out through the Chief Secretary and Director General of Police (DGP) to ensure swift and effective responses should any threats emerge. Regular meetings are held between the state authorities and central agencies, including the BSF, to assess and address ongoing challenges along the border.

“In view of the sensitive nature of the situation, traditional heads and local village authorities have been directed to extend full cooperation to the security forces,” Tynsong said.

He further said, “We are closely monitoring the situation at the international border with Bangladesh. Everything is under control, but we are not taking any chances.”

He added that while infiltration remains a concern, coordinated vigilance and community cooperation have so far ensured the safety of the border areas.

The Deputy Chief Minister also shed light on persistent land issues affecting fencing efforts along certain stretches of the border. Many of these unfenced areas are due to landowners’ reluctance to allow fencing due to treaty constraints. Under existing bilateral agreements, permanent structures like border fences must be built 150 meters inside the Indian side from the ‘zero line’ of the actual international boundary. This often results in Indian land falling outside the fenced area, limiting access and use, especially for local farmers.

“This land becomes effectively inaccessible, creating a no-man’s land scenario. We understand the concerns of the landowners and are actively working through the Deputy Commissioners to find a viable solution,” Tynsong said.

The government’s focus remains on securing all vulnerable stretches of the border while balancing the interests of local communities.
