NSF, ANCSU Resume Protests Demanding Revocation of 147 Assistant Professors’ Regularization

First Published: 29th April, 2025 17:12 IST

147 Assistant Professors’ Regularizatio: The protest coincides with the end of a seven-day ultimatum issued earlier by the NSF.

Members of the Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) and the All Nagaland College Students’ Union (ANCSU) today resumed their protest, demanding the revocation of the regularisation of 147 Assistant Professors and Librarians in Nagaland.

The demonstration took place outside the Directorate of Higher Education in Kohima, where protesters attempted to force entry into the premises. However, security personnel stationed at the gate successfully restrained them. The protest coincides with the end of a seven-day ultimatum issued earlier by the NSF.

Joining the agitation were members of the Combined Technical Association of Nagaland (CTAN) and the Nagaland NET Qualified Forum (NNQF), both of which have also raised concerns over the appointments.

The renewed protests follow a high-level meeting held yesterday between representatives of NSF, CTAN and NNQF and state leaders, including Deputy Chief Minister T.R. Zeliang, Minister K.G. Kenye, and Chief Secretary J. Alam. During the meeting, the state government assured that the High Powered Committee (HPC) tasked with reviewing the regularisation process would now submit its report within one month instead of the earlier two-month timeframe.

Deputy CM Zeliang stated that the HPC’s objective is to determine who authorised the appointments, in which years, and on what basis. He added that the government intends to hold the responsible department and officials accountable based on the findings of the HPC.

It needs to be mentioned that, earlier on April 21 the Naga Students’ Federation (NSF), and the All Nagaland College Students’ Union (ANCSU) gave a seven-day ultimatum to the Nagaland government to roll back the Cabinet decision regularising the appointment of 147 adhoc assistant professors in Nagaland.

The Naga Students’ Federation had earlier strongly condemned the Nagaland Cabinet’s decision on Thursday to regularise 147 contractual assistant professors’ posts in the Department of Higher Education. The Federation called the move “very blunt” and criticized the government for taking such a step despite widespread opposition from various organizations.”
