Mizoram: MZP Launches Indefinite Road Blockade At Pukpui

First Published: 29th April, 2025 14:33 IST

The ATL road that needs repair spans approximately 70 kms, connecting Kanghmun South to Kikawn.

The Lunglei unit of the Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP) on Monday launched a road blockade at Pukpui, demanding the release of funds allegedly diverted from its primary purpose of repairing a key road connecting south Mizoram’s Lunglei town.

MZP Lunglei claimed that the government allocated Rs 90.69 crore solely for repairing the Aizawl-Thenzawl-Lunglei (ATL) road, out of which Rs 45 crore was diverted for improvement of roads across state capital Aizawl.

MZP further claimed that nearly half of the sanctioned amount has been misappropriated for other purposes.

The unit further stated that despite previous demands urging the state government to restore the missing funds, no action has been taken, prompting the student body to intensify their protest.

The ATL road that needs repair spans approximately 70 kms, connecting Kanghmun South to Kikawn.

However, the state government is reportedly planning to reconstruct only a 14km stretch between Pukpui and Mausen, a move MZP Lunglei deems inadequate and unfair.

The ongoing blockade exempts fire and emergency services, medical transport, and water supply trucks.
The protest is set to continue on Tuesday at Hrangchalkawn on the National Highway.

Earlier, the organisation had given 15 days of timeline to the government to release the allegedly diverted fund.

The blockade was backed by 15 organisations, including commercial vehicle operators, Lunglei sub-headquarters of MZP secretary K Lalchhuanawma said.

PWD minister and officials could not be contacted on the matter.
