The political temperature in Assam has soared after explosive allegations surfaced against Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi regarding an alleged visit to Pakistan and purported financial links between his wife and a Pakistan-based NGO. In the backdrop of the deadly Pahalgam terror attack that claimed 28 lives, the controversy has only intensified, drawing sharp reactions and raising serious questions.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, without naming Gogoi directly, demanded answers to If Gogoi visited Pakistan and stay there continuously for 15 days? If so, CM Sarma asked, if he could clarify the purpose of his visit.
The Chief Minister further questioned whether Gogoi’s wife, Elizabeth Colburn Gogoi, continues to receive a salary from a Pakistan-based NGO while residing and working in India, and pressed for clarity on the citizenship status of Gogoi’s wife and two children.
CM Himanta Biswa Sarma hinted that this is just the beginning, warning that “many more questions will follow.”
“Questions for the Hon’ble Member of Parliament from the Congress Party: 1.Did you visit Pakistan for a continuous period of 15 days? If so, could you kindly clarify the purpose of your visit? http://2.Is it true that your wife continues to receive a salary from a Pakistan-based NGO while residing and working in India? If so, may we ask why a Pakistan-based organization is paying a salary for activities conducted in India? 3.What is the citizenship status of your wife and your two children? Are they Indian citizens, or do they hold the citizenship of any other country? Many more questions will follow,” the Chief Minister tweeted.
Earlier, CM Sarma stated that the Assam Government has enough evidence to prove that the Congress MP had travelled to Pakistan multiple times.
He even offered to resign if Gogoi could prove he had never visited Pakistan.
Responding to Gaurav Gogoi’s reported denial of any Pakistan links, CM Sarma doubled down, stating that a Special Investigation Team (SIT) had gathered leads substantiating that Elizabeth Gogoi had received a salary from a Pakistan-linked entity while working with an NGO in Delhi.
The Chief Minister also revealed that initial probes indicate Gogoi had travelled to Nepal as well and had failed to inform the Centre about his Islamabad stay, a mandatory protocol violation for Indian MPs.
CM Himanta Biswa Sarma said that a detailed report establishing links between Gogoi’s family and Pakistan-based entities would be released by September this year.
Meanwhile, the SIT continues its probe into the alleged connection between Elizabeth Gogoi and Pakistani citizen Ali Tauqir Sheikh, associated with the NGO in question.
