Assam: Dhing AIUDF MLA Aminul Islam arrested for controversial statement on Pahalgam terror attack

Aminul Islam sparked a political firestorm after claiming that the Narendra Modi-led BJP government had links to the recent Pahalgam terror attack

Aminul Islam, MLA of the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) from the Dhing constituency has been arrested by the Assam Police Crime Branch after highly controversial remarks alleging the involvement of the central government in recent and past terrorist attacks in Jammu and Kashmir.

Islam sparked a political firestorm after claiming that the Narendra Modi-led BJP government had links to the recent Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, which left 28 people dead, and the 2019 Pulwama attack, in which 42 CRPF personnel lost their lives.

Aminul Islam said, “Back in 2019, when the Pulwama attack killed 42 CRPF jawans, I had said it was a conspiracy by the Centre to polarise the country before the 2019 Lok Sabha elections and demanded for an unbiased investigation.”

He further questioned the narrative around the recent Pahalgam attack, alleging that, “BJP has been saying that terrorists have checked whether one is Hindu or Muslim and shot only the non-muslims after identifying. However, survivors and victims have said no one was asked their names and that they were simply fired upon from a distance.”

“We suspect that what happened in Pahalgam is a similar conspiracy of the Centre to incite hatred and violence against Muslims across the country for political gain,” said Aminul Islam.

Responding to the incident, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “Aminul Islam’s statement has pained the people of Assam. He has been arrested by the Assam Police for his statement which is traitorous in nature. I hope he will be presented before the court, where appropriate legal action will be taken.”

Issuing a stern warning to elements acting against national interest, CM Sarma said, “I want to warn everyone and all anti-India forces, any attempt to support Pakistan, whether directly or indirectly, from Assam will not be tolerated. I have directed Assam Police to take stringent action against such acts.”
