Parents Killed for Superstition, Children Orphaned; 3 Accused Arrested

In a sad case of superstitious beliefs, a husband and wife were beaten to death in Namobor River Tea Garden in the Bokajan sub-division of Karbi Anglong district on Saturday night.

The victims, identified as Jurlo Munda and Panchami Munda, were beaten. Their bodies were recovered by the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) on Sunday from a pond located around one kilometre away from their home.

The children were also attacked inside their bedroom on the same night but they survived, and are in a state of deep trauma and shock.

Acting swiftly, the police arrested three people who were involved in the killing that has left the three children of the couple orphaned.

The arrested accused have been identified as Hiren Narzary, Yogeshwar Praja, and Krishna Kharia. Police believe that the motive behind the killing was rooted in superstition, although investigations are ongoing to find out more details.

Karbi Anglong Superintendent of Police Sanjeev Kumar Saikia visited the crime scene and confirmed the arrests. He stated that the police are taking the case very seriously and are collecting all necessary evidence to ensure justice.

Reacting strongly to the incident, the Karbi Anglong district committee of the All Assam Indigenous Students’ Union has condemned the murder and demanded exemplary punishment for the accused so that such acts are not repeated.
