Manipur: Security Forces Fire Tear Gas as Land Dispute Turns Chaotic

Situation grew tense at the Athokpam area in Thoubal District today as security forces fired tear gas shells and smoke bombs to disperse an irate mob.

As per sources the incident broke out over an alleged encroachment issue involving a house construction between Athokpam and Khangabok area. The construction apparently crossed its allotted land limit.

Officials also visited the residence on April 20 and informed the owner to remove the excess portion within a week.

The local people also requested the owner to dismantle the excess portion, but the appeal went unheard.

Following which the locals got agitated and destroyed the extra portion as the owner was adamant on his stand.

As the situation became volatile, the police had to resort to tear gas firing to control the situation.
