A fresh political row has erupted in Tripura after an idol of Lord Ram was installed at the very site where the statue of former Deputy Chief Minister of Tripura and communist leader Baidyanath Majumder once stood before it was dismantled in 2018.
The Lord Ram idol was installed by unidentified individuals at the site in Kailashahar on Friday night.
The development has reignited ideological tensions between the ruling BJP and the opposition CPI(M).
Reacting sharply to the incident, Tripura’s Leader of Opposition and CPI(M) state secretary Jitendra Chaudhury lashed out at those responsible for installing the idol of Lord Ram at the disputed site questioning the intent behind the move.
“Baidyanath Majumder’s statue was installed at the Srirampur Tri-junction of the Chandipur RD block in Kailashahar in 2012, but right after the BJP government came into power in the state in 2018, Majumder’s statue was vandalised by unknown miscreants. It was decided that CPI (M) would reinstall the statue at the very site. However, on Friday night, some people installed an idol of Lord Ram on the vacant space. What kind of ridiculous culture is this? What kind of politics is this? If you wish to install an idol of Lord Ram, must it be placed on the base where another leader’s statue once stood?” he said.
In a letter to CM Manik Saha on Sunday, the Leader of the Opposition wrote, “The statue was vandalised and thrown into the Manu river in 2018, right after the BJP government came into power in the state. Then Chief Minister, Biplab Kumar Deb had expressed regret over the incident and had asked well-wishers to set up another statue in the same place. Local residents were preparing to set up another statue. But this incident occurred.”
The Leader of the Opposition has demanded the ruling BJP government reinstall the statue of Majumder and relocate the Lord Ram idol respectfully to a more appropriate site.
