Section 163 Imposed in Assam’s Cachar After Anti-Waqf Protest Turns Violent. Know the Restrictions

Section 163 Imposed in Assam's Cachar : No assembly of 5 or more persons without prior permission.

Amid rising tensions over protests against the Waqf Amendment Act 2025, in Assam’s Cachar district today, the district administration has imposed Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS)  to prevent further unrest.

As per the order, the following restrictions are now in place:

  1. No assembly of 5 or more persons without prior permission.
  2. No bandh, rallies, strikes, dharnas, or demonstrations are allowed without approval.
  3. Carrying weapons, explosives, or suspicious items is strictly prohibited.
  4. Obstruction of traffic and unauthorized parking of vehicles is banned.
  5. Use of loudspeakers or high-decibel sound instruments requires permission.

The order, however, exempts State and Central government employees on official duty, along with essential emergency services such as ambulances and fire brigades.

Authorities have urged the public to extend their cooperation in maintaining peace and law and order in the district.

Protests over the Waqf Act rocked Silchar town in Cachar today creating a brief law and order situation in the area.

Things turned tense when a group of protestors taking part in the rally started pelting stones.

Police had to apply mild force to disperse the crowd and control the situation.

Scores from the Muslim community, took part in the protest march from the Berenga Madhurbond area, carrying placards and banners.

The demonstrators raised slogans creating a charged atmosphere.

Force had to be used to disperse the crowd from the main road.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has issued a stern warning to protestors stating that while the government is not opposed to peaceful protests, any violation of the law will not be tolerated.
