He expressed strong disapproval of the Act, calling it “one-sided”.
The Manipur unit of the National People’s Party (NPP), an ally of the NDA in the state, has firmly opposed the recently enacted Waqf Amendment Act 2025. At a press conference held at the party office in Imphal today, NPP Manipur President Yumnam Joykumar Singh expressed strong disapproval of the Act, calling it “one-sided”.
He extended full and unwavering support to the party’s Working President and MLA, Sheikh Noorul Hassan, who has taken a bold step by filing a petition in the Supreme Court challenging the constitutionality of the Act. Joykumar praised Hassan’s principled stand and assured that the NPP stands united in defence of justice and minority rights. “We support MLA Sheikh Noorul Hassan in his fight for fairness and constitutional protection,” Joykumar Singh said.
MLA Noorul Hassan earlier announced that he would challenge the Act in the Supreme Court. He said the Waqf Amendment Act, passed by Parliament last week, violates Article 26 of the Indian Constitution and infringes upon the fundamental rights of minorities.
The NPP reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the rights of all communities and ensuring transparency and justice in all matters of public interest.
Meanwhile, for the fourth time, thousands of Meitei Pangal (Manipur Muslim) men and women took to the streets in Imphal East today to protest against the amended Waqf Act.
The large-scale rally, jointly organized by 19 Muslim organizations, began at Hatta Minuthong and concluded at Golapati Public Ground. Demonstrators formed human chains, raised slogans opposing the bill, and marched in a show of unity and dissent.
