Meghalaya Set for Scientific Coal Mining Expansion, 10 New Licenses Likely Soon: CM Conrad Sangma

Meghalaya: CM highlighted that while extraction is underway, certain logistical issues related to coal transportation are being addressed.
Regulated coal mining in Meghalaya is poised for a significant expansion as Chief Minister Conrad Sangma announced that 10 to 11 additional mining sites are on the verge of receiving clearance for scientific coal extraction. This development marks a turning point for the state’s mining industry, which has faced years of scrutiny over unregulated practices.
Speaking on the matter, Sangma confirmed that three mining sites have already been granted full operational clearance and have commenced coal extraction using scientific methods. “Mining has started in a scientific manner. Coal India has seen it, the Coal Ministry has reviewed it, and both are satisfied with the process,” he said.
The Chief Minister highlighted that while extraction is underway, certain logistical issues related to coal transportation are still being addressed. Despite these, the groundwork for a regulated and transparent mining framework is firmly being laid.
Sangma also hinted at the rapid progress being made toward approving more mines. “We are moving forward. Within a month or two, we expect another 10 to 11 miners to get the green light,” he stated, adding that most of these are located in the East Jaintia Hills and West Khasi Hills districts.
This shift towards scientific and regulated coal mining is expected to boost the local economy while ensuring environmental safeguards and legal compliance. It also aligns with efforts to balance resource utilisation with sustainable development in Meghalaya.
