Jonathan Garner of Morgan Stanley advises investors to adopt a defensive strategy and adjust their portfolios due to changing market conditions.

The Indian stock market witnessed a sharp plunge on Monday, wiping out nearly Rs 24 lakh crore in investor wealth the steepest single-day fall in nearly a year. With global tensions rising over Donald Trump’s reciprocal tariff push, panic selling gripped Dalal Street, leaving investors anxious and uncertain.

Amid rising tariff tensions and sharp market corrections, investors are understandably anxious. Many are considering a shift to safer investment options, unsure of what lies ahead. In such situations, the most common and pressing questions come to the investor’s mind: What should I do now? How can I protect my investments from further losses?

Experts, however, urge calm. Market crashes can be quite unsettling, but are not new and navigating them wisely can protect, and even grow, your investments, say experts. Here’s what financial advisors recommend during turbulent times like these:

Swapnil Aggarwal, director of VSRK Capital, said amid ongoing fears of a recession, Indian investors are advised to stay cautious but not panic. It’s important to maintain a balanced approach in the current market scenario, reported News 18.

Vijayakumar from Geojit Financial Services pointed out a few key factors investors should keep in mind during this market turbulence. First, the disruptive tariff measures introduced by Trump are unlikely to last long. Second, India is in a relatively stronger position with exports to the US accounting for just about 2% of its GDP, the impact on overall growth is expected to be minimal. And third, India is actively working on a Bilateral Trade Agreement with the US, which, if successful, could lead to reduced tariffs and more stability for Indian trade.

Swapnil Aggarwal of VSRK Capital said focus should be directed towards sectors like FMCG, pharma, and finance, which are currently showing relative strength and resilience, reported News 18.

Jonathan Garner of Morgan Stanley advises investors to adopt a defensive strategy and adjust their portfolios due to changing market conditions. He recommends focusing on bond-proxies such as utilities, telecommunications, and consumer staples, which are more stable during market volatility, reported Hindustan Time.

“No one has a clue about how this turbulence caused by Trump tariffs will evolve. Wait and watch would be the best strategy,” cautioned V K Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Financial Services, reported Times Now.

Stephen Kates, a CFP at Bankrate, reminds investors that “invested money should never be needed in the short term.” So, build a diversified strategy that reflects your long game, reported the Economic Times.

Michael Cochran of BentOak Capital puts it well: “Instead of making major changes based on policy headlines, it’s wiser to stay diversified and focus on your long-term goals.”
