The project will upgrade the highway to a 2-lane road with paved shoulders, covering a total length of 23.717 km.

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari on Sunday announced that the Centre has approved an allocation of Rs. 770.25 crore for the widening and upgradation of National Highway 717A in West Bengal and Sikkim. He informed the public about the major infrastructure push through a post on his X account.

The project will upgrade the highway to a 2-lane road with paved shoulders, covering a total length of 23.717 km. This includes 18.42 km from Lavamore to the start of the Pedong Bypass in Kalimpong district of West Bengal, and 5.297 km from Reshi to Rhenock in Sikkim.

Officials will also carry out critical slope protection works along the Bagrakot-Kafer stretch in Kalimpong, an area vulnerable to landslides and road collapses, especially during monsoons.

As a climate-resilient alternative to NH-10 which often suffers disruptions during the rainy season the upgraded NH-717A will employ advanced engineering technologies such as Self Drilling Anchors and Gabion structures to ensure road stability and durability.
