Health Hazard: Biomedical Waste From JNIMS Dumped Near Central Dairy, Imphal

Biomedical Waste: The hazardous waste has been lying abandoned for over 3-4 months, just 100-200 meters from the dairy plant’s machinery.
In a major health concern, authorities found that biomedical and chemical waste from the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) has been dumped just metres away from the Central Dairy in Imphal’s Porompat, the largest government run dairy of Manipur with a large consumer base across the capital city.
As per inputs, the hazardous waste has been lying abandoned for over 3-4 months, just 100-200 meters from the dairy plant’s machinery and equipment and about 100 meters from the cattle feed facility.
This development has sparked serious concerns about the safety of milk processed at the facility and its potential environmental and public health impact.
Following complaints from locals about a foul odour emanating from the dairy plant complex, a team from Northeast Live visited the site and witnessed a disturbing scene—heaps of biomedical and chemical waste, including human and animal anatomical remains, abandoned in coloured plastic bags.
According to sources, yellow bags contain radioactive human and animal anatomical waste, soiled medical waste, expired medicines, chemical waste, and microbiological and clinical waste. Meanwhile, red bags hold contaminated medical supplies such as tubes, bottles, IV sets, catheters, urine bags, syringes (without needles), and gloves.
Not only this, the dumping site is also alarmingly close to Modern College’s swimming pool and drainage systems that flow into Khurai Assembly Constituency and Premi Khong before ultimately reaching the Kongba River.
