Railway Projects and Winter Capital: Both committees will comprise of 2 representatives from each of recognised, registered political parties.
The Meghalaya Governor has constituted two All-Party Committees to deliberate on two critical issues – the much disputed railway projects in the state, and the establishment of a Winter Capital in Tura.
Both committees will comprise of two representatives from each of the recognised and registered political parties. Both the committees will be chaired by the Chief Minister of Meghalaya or a minister nominated by the Chief Minister.
The railway committee will focus on the introduction and construction of railway infrastructure in Meghalaya. Its primary objectives include examining solutions to facilitate railway connectivity, conducting a cost-benefit analysis, and gathering views from all relevant stakeholders. The committee is tasked with submitting its recommendations to the state government after thorough deliberation.
This committee comes in the backdrop of stiff opposition from certain sections to Railway projects in the state.
The winter capital committee will assess the feasibility of establishing a Winter Capital at Tura, in response to demands made by various NGOs and civil society groups. The committee will study the advantages and disadvantages of having dual-state capitals and seek opinions from concerned stakeholders. A comprehensive report will be submitted to the state government upon completion.
Government departments will be invited to participate in the discussions, ensuring comprehensive deliberation. These initiatives reflect the state’s commitment to inclusive decision-making, involving political parties and stakeholders in shaping policies for Meghalaya’s development, an official release said.
