Sangma said the Tura Government Medical College's importance also lay in the fact that quality health care has become extremely expensive

In a development that will bring cheer to many in the Garo Hills region, the upcoming medical college in the town of Tura-Tura Government Medical College is fast approaching completion with major sections on the verge of being completed. Former CM, Dr Mukul Sangma, who paid a visit to the site of the hospital expressed hope that the first session for the long awaited project might finally begin as early as next year.

Yesterday, Mukul Sangma, along with many of his party members paid a visit to the site to oversee its progress in the village of Darengre, on the outskirts of the town of Tura.

“This project is funded by the Government of India (GOI) and I had the privilege of laying the foundation stone. I am happy that this particular land was identified by the GOI wherein existing hospitals are leveraged upon. The existing infrastructure where substantial investment has been made is what the GOI wanted to use and extend support to states on,” said Mukul after the visit.

Sangma added that this was among the first batch of programmes under the initiative.

“This delay is a cause of concern and we have taken up this issue with the government of Meghalaya. We want to ensure that this project is ultimately not subject to time and cost over runs. We have taken this issue in the last Assembly session as well and we have been given assurances that all necessary measures, including funds, monitoring will be available to ensure the project is not further delayed. We want to ensure this is not delayed further,” said Mukul.

The former CM stated that as of now the physical progress matched what was mentioned in the Assembly.

“It has been found out that they can complete the academic block by Aug 31 this year and other infrastructure should be ready by Dec 31. We have the teaching hospital (Tura Civil Hospital) where it is necessary to increase the bed capacity – which is integral to the program. Initially Rs 25 crores was sanctioned for the additional beds. We will be reviewing that as well. It is necessary to push this project in a manner that is commensurate with the expectations of the people,” said Mukul Sangma on the reason for their visit.

“This can transform the socio-economic landscape of the state. The Tura Government Medical College is for the people of the whole state,” said Sangma.

He said the project’s importance also lay in the fact that quality health care has become extremely expensive, especially when they are referred outside the state.

“This medical college will be the reference point for all patients that require specialized treatment. In addition to helping our youth who want to pursue being a doctor and serving the people, it will also provide access to quality healthcare for people of our region. We must do all that is necessary to see that the project is completed at the earliest and we would like academic sessions to begin from the next year. We would like to press the government to begin academic sessions next year if all the necessary infrastructure is set up and operational,” added the TMC leader.

He later paid a visit to the Tura Civil Hospital as part of the review yesterday afternoon.
