The Supreme Court on Friday decided to examine the Centre’s decision to grant 10 per cent quota both in jobs and educational sector to general category people belonging to the economically backward class.
The apex court decided to look into the matter as several pleas challenging the Centre’s decision were filed before it.
Petitions challenging the Centre’s decision have been filed by Janhit Abhiyan, Youth for equality organisation, Kaushal Kant Mishra, businessman Tehseen Poonawalla.
Political party DMK, has filed a petition in Madras High Court. Petitioners argue that overall reservation cannot exceed 50 per cent but the recent bill has taken it to almost 60 per cent.
A two-judge bench, comprising of Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice Sanjiv Khanna will hear the petition.
