Mizoram Sheltering 41000 People From Myanmar, Bangladesh and Manipur: Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma on Sunday said that the state is facing a serious humanitarian challenge with around 41,000 displaced people from Myanmar, Bangladesh, and Manipur seeking refuge. The Chief Minister stressed that the state government is struggling to meet the basic needs of these displaced individuals with its limited resources and has called on the Centre for continuous support.
“We currently have around 41,000 displaced people from Myanmar, Bangladesh, and Manipur. We have to feed them, provide them with shelter, and educate their children. With the limited resources we have, it is becoming a huge burden on the state. We need continuous support from the Centre. Also, since we have a long international boundary, we need more immigration checkpoints,” Lalduhoma said.
Mizoram Sheltering 41000 People From Myanmar, Bangladesh and Manipur
According to reports, Mizoram is currently sheltering over 33,712 refugees from Myanmar, who have fled ongoing turmoil in their country. The refugees include 10,119 males and 10,782 females, many of whom are grappling with economic instability and an uncertain future. Their struggle includes finding stable incomes, securing education for their children, and coping with the psychological trauma of displacement.
Authorities report that 12,811 of the refugees are minors, with Champhai district hosting the highest number of displaced individuals at 13,966, including 5,232 children. Some refugee families have managed to enroll their children in private schools, while others depend on government institutions. Makeshift schools have also emerged in some refugee camps, ensuring that children have access to basic education despite the difficult circumstances.
Since the violence broke out in Manipur on May 3, 2023, around 12,000 people from Manipur have taken refuge in Mizoram. The state has been providing shelter and support to them despite its limited resources.
Chief Minister Lalduhoma also informed during the recent budget session that over 2,000 foreigners entered Mizoram between June and December 2024. However, despite this significant influx, Mizoram recorded very few foreign tourists. The Chief Minister suggested that this trend indicates Mizoram is being used primarily as a transit route by foreigners traveling to Myanmar.
In a memorandum submitted to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Central young Mizo Association, Mizoram has also requested the Centre to provide humanitarian assistance and allocate more funds to IDPS from Myanmar, Bangladesh and Manipur.
