“Peace Doesn’t Pay,” Says Mizoram CM Lalduhoma, Urges Centre for Peace Bonus and Better Support

Peace Doesn’t Pay: Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma has called on the Union government to provide a “peace bonus” to Mizoram, arguing that peace should be rewarded rather than overlooked. He raised several critical issues during his meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah, focusing on the lack of security-related expenditure (SRE) support for Mizoram despite its peaceful status.
“The rest of the states receive security-related expenditure (SRE), but Mizoram is denied it because we are the most peaceful state in the country. So being the most peaceful state in the country means you become a loser. Peace doesn’t pay; peace doesn’t have dividends. I request the Home Ministry to either extend the SRE facility to us or at least give us a peace bonus. This will set a positive example for other states, showing that peace pays,” Lalduhoma said.
The Chief Minister also highlighted the strain on Mizoram’s resources due to the large number of displaced people from Myanmar, Bangladesh, and Manipur seeking shelter in the state.
“We are currently housing around 41,000 displaced people from Myanmar, Bangladesh, and Manipur. We have to feed them, shelter them, and educate their children. Managing this with our limited resources has become a significant burden on the state’s shoulders. We need continuous support from the Centre,” he stated.
Lalduhoma pointed out the poor state of infrastructure and law enforcement in Mizoram, blaming it on a high rate of police vacancies and a shortage of vehicles and funds.
“We have a high vacancy rate in the police department, which is affecting overall performance. There’s also a shortage of vehicles and funds. Our long international boundary demands more immigration checkpoints to strengthen security and border management,” he added.
The Chief Minister also stressed the need for better internet connectivity in Mizoram, which has been a longstanding issue affecting various sectors.
“The main problem we are facing in Mizoram is poor internet connectivity. This has become a major challenge to fully rollout the new criminal laws. The Ministry of Communication and IT must come up with a scheme to solve this issue immediately,” Lalduhoma stated.
