Assam: KSA Protests in Diphu Demanding Permanent Ban on Fish Trader After Brutal Attack on Member

The protest was triggered by a violent attack on KSA member Sukursing Enghee, allegedly carried out by Nazirul Islam, a fish vendor.
Tensions ran high in Diphu, Karbi Anglong district of Assam on Saturday as the Karbi Students’ Association (KSA) Hamren Regional Committee staged a massive dharna demanding strict action against a fish trader at Diphu Fish Market.
The protest was triggered by a violent attack on KSA member Sukursing Enghee, allegedly carried out by Nazirul Islam, a fish vendor.
The student body, outraged over the assault, has protested the Karbi Anglong District Council’s (KADC) decision to temporarily suspend Islam’s trading license. Instead, the student body has demanded a permanent cancellation of the license, arguing that mere suspension is an insufficient response to such a violent act.
KSA leaders strongly condemned the attack, calling it an attempt to silence their voice.
The protesters held placards with bold messages like “We Want Justice for Sukursing Enghee” and “Bangladeshi Go Back”, emphasising their anger and urging authorities to take a firm stand against such incidents.
The demonstration remained peaceful, but emotions ran high as the association members vowed to intensify their movement if their demands were not met.
The KSA has also called for a broader discussion on ensuring safety and justice for local traders and students.
The KSA maintained that merely suspending the vendor’s license is inadequate and is pushing for permanent punitive action.
While the administration hopes the temporary suspension of Islam’s license will calm the situation, the student body remains firm on its demand for a permanent ban.
With anger and stir growing, the situation in Diphu remains on edge, awaiting the next move from both the authorities and the student body.
