Sky Train to Beat Shillong Traffic?

Sky Train to Beat Shillong Traffic? As the government considers a Skywalk, the demand for a more efficient alternative has gained momentum.

Shillong’s worsening traffic congestion has prompted Opposition TMC legislator Charles Pyngrope to urge the Meghalaya Government to explore the feasibility study of a Sky Train as a long-term solution.

With land scarcity posing a major challenge, he suggested that an elevated rail system could providerelief from the gridlock that plagues the city’s roads daily.

As the government considers a Skywalk, the demand for a more efficient alternative has gained momentum. The introduction of a Sky Train would not only address congestion but also provide a modern, sustainable mode of urban transport suited to Shillong’s terrain.

Pyngrope also stressed the need for an organized school bus system to reduce the volume of private vehicles during peak hours. Drawing from Assam’s successful model, he pointed out that school buses have streamlined student transportation in the neighboring state, ensuring efficient and disciplined commuting. He urged the Education Department to make school bus services mandatory in Shillong, emphasizing its effectiveness in cities worldwide.

While acknowledging the success of STEM bus services, which have significantly eased school-hour congestion, he raised concerns about roadside parking, a major contributor to Shillong’s persistent traffic snarls. The indiscriminate parking of vehicles on narrow streets has led to prolonged delays, impacting both daily commuters and emergency services.

With Shillong’s traffic situation reaching a critical point, the call for bold, transformative urban mobility solutions grows louder. Whether the government will act on these proposals remains to be seen.
