Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday attended the historic relocation ceremony of the Assam Rifles establishments from Aizawl, marking a significant step in the relocation of Assam Rifles establishments from the city centre to Zokhawsang.
Addressing the gathering, Shah underscored the importance of the move, describing it as more than just a land transfer. He stated, “This programme is not just about the transfer of Assam Rifles, but it is a very important step. For about 35 years, due to the topography and dearth of space, there was a demand to shift the Assam Rifles camp. If we have to develop Aizawl City, space constraints are a major hurdle. Today, with an important decision by PM Modi, this long-pending demand has been fulfilled.”
The relocation aims to unlock much-needed space for Aizawl’s urban expansion and infrastructure development. Shah stressed that this decision reflects the Government of India’s commitment to the welfare of the Mizo people, ensuring both developmental growth and continued operational efficiency of the Assam Rifles.

The formal agreement for relocating the Assam Rifles from Aizawl’s main barrack complex (AR Ground) to Zokhawsang, located approximately 15 km from the state capital, was signed on 23 October last year.

The inauguration ceremony witnessed the presence of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, Union Home Secretary Gobind Mohan, IB Director Tapan Kumar Deka, and other prominent officials.
During his address, Shah described the establishment of the academy as a tribute to the legendary Ahom general, Lachit Borphukan. He highlighted Assam’s transformation from a period marked by violence, protests, and terrorism to an era of peace and development. Shah credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership for the region’s progress, pointing to key peace accords and agreements between Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, and Meghalaya aimed at resolving border conflicts.
The Union Home Minister reaffirmed the Centre’s commitment to fostering stability and growth in the Northeast, underscoring its focus on creating an environment conducive to development and investment.
