Padma Shri Lil Bahadur Chhetri, Eminent Nepali Litterateur, Passes Away at 92

Noted Nepali litterateur Padma Shri Lil Bahadur Chhetri passed away at the age of 92, leaving behind an indelible legacy in literature.

Lil Bahadur Chhetri, a prominent literary figure from Guwahati, Assam breathed his last on Thursday night after a prolonged illness.

Chhetri is survived by his two wives, two sons, daughters-in-law, and two grandsons. His funeral will be performed today.

His passing marks the end of an era, but his literary works will continue to inspire generations and serve as a powerful reflection of societal struggles and cultural identity.

Born on March 1, 1933, Lil Bahadur Chhetri was an acclaimed Indian Gorkha writer in the Nepali language.
He gained prominence with his novel Basain (1957), a moving tale that portrays the exploitation of poor villagers by the feudal upper class.
His writings not only highlighted marginalized voices but also shaped modern Nepali literature and cultural discourse.
The novel remains a part of the Tribhuvan University curriculum in Nepal, underlining its lasting literary and cultural significance.

His novel Brahmaputrako Chheu Chhau (1986), which reflects the struggles of the Nepali-speaking community in Assam, won him the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1987.

His works have played a crucial role in shaping modern Nepali literature and cultural discourse.

In 2023, he was bestowed with Life Time Achievement Felicitation for his continuous contribution to Gorkha’s language and literature even at the age of 90 years.

In 2020, the Government of India awarded him Padmashri, the fourth highest civilian award of India for his contribution in literature and education.

For his exceptional contributions to Nepali literature and language, Chhetri was honoured with the Jagadamba Shree Puraskar in 2016, one of Nepal’s most prestigious literary awards.
