Mizoram Govt Extends Jobs of 29 Assistant Professors In Violation of UGC Norms, MSU Demands Immediate Cancellation

The union has demanded the immediate cancellation of the approval letters granted to these Assistant Professors.

In a clear violation of UGC norms, the Mizoram government has extended the employment of 29 part-time Assistant Professors who lack the mandatory qualifications for the role as laid down by the University Grants Commission (UGC).

The decision has sparked sharp criticism from the Mizoram Students’ Union (MSU), which is demanding the immediate cancellation of their approval and job extension letters.

As per UGC guidelines, college teachers must clear the National Eligibility Test (NET) or hold a PhD to qualify for their positions. However, despite repeated instructions from the state government, these Assistant Professors have failed to meet the required academic standards.

But, on February 21, 2025, the Higher and Technical Education Department issued a notification extending their employment for another year on humanitarian grounds, allowing them more time to meet the eligibility criteria.

The Mizoram Students Union (MSU) has strongly criticised the move, arguing that underqualified professors compromise academic standards.

The union has demanded the immediate cancellation of the approval letters granted to these Assistant Professors.

“All 29 Assistant Professors were given several chances to meet the required qualifications, but they have failed to do so. Those who do not meet the eligibility criteria are unfit for the role. We urge the government to cancel their approval letters immediately,” said B. Lalkhawngaihzuala President, MSU.

The controversy comes at a time when the UGC is reviewing its regulations for faculty recruitment.

On January 6, 2025, the UGC released draft regulations for the appointment of Assistant Professors in colleges/universities requesting stakeholders to submit feedback on the draft regulations.

The Centre received over 15,000 suggestions on these proposed changes as of March 12, 2025, said Union Minister of State for Education & Development of North Eastern Region, Sukanta Majumdar.
