The integration of blockchain technology, widely used in agricultural supply chains worldwide, will help prevent price manipulation
Assam is set to introduce India’s first AI-powered and blockchain-based tea auction system, aiming to bring greater transparency, efficiency, and security to the tea trade. The initiative, announced by Assam Finance Minister Ajanta Neog during the budget speech, will revolutionize the auction process, ensuring fair pricing and seamless transactions for buyers and sellers.
The integration of blockchain technology, widely used in agricultural supply chains worldwide, will help prevent price manipulation and ensure a tamper-proof record of transactions.
Highlighting Assam’s 200-year-old tea legacy, Neog also announced a major welfare initiative for tea garden workers. To express gratitude to the community that plays a vital role in the state’s economy, the government will provide a one-time financial assistance of Rs. 5,000 to each of the 6.8 lakh tea garden workers, both casual and permanent. The state has allocated Rs. 342 crore for this initiative.
Speaking to North East Live, Bidyananda Barkakoty, Adviser to the North Eastern Tea Association (NETA) and Former Vice Chairman of the Tea Board of India, welcomed the introduction of the new system. He said that while the existing tea auction system in India has remained largely unchanged for 160 years, it is time to move to the next level.
He added that blockchain technology has been successfully used in agricultural supply chains worldwide and will enhance transparency in tea auctions. However, he suggested that the transition to the new system should be implemented gradually to avoid disruptions.
