The Minister said that between 2021 and 2024, a total of 156 Bangladeshi nationals were identified in Assam.
Assam Parliamentary Affairs Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary today told the Assam Assembly that only 39 persons have applied for Indian citizenship under the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) since its implementation, countering earlier fears of a massive influx.
The Minister said that of these 39 applicants, only two individuals have been granted citizenship, while 18 applications remain under review and 19 have been rejected though applicants can reapply.
Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary recalled the widespread protests that erupted when CAA was enacted, with claims that crores of Bangladeshi nationals would flood Assam and alter its demography. However, the numbers tell a different story, he emphasised.
Speaking on illegal immigration, the minister said that between 2021 and 2024, a total of 156 Bangladeshi nationals were identified in Assam, with 51 detected in 2021, 57 in 2022, 22 in 2023, and 26 in 2024.
The CAA, passed in 2019, aims to grant citizenship to persecuted non-Muslim minorities from Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan. However, regional groups, including NESO, continue to oppose it, citing concerns over Assam’s demographic balance and fears of increased illegal immigration.
