Manipur’s RS MP Maharaja Sanajaoba Leishemba Calls for Reclaiming Kabaw Valley: Manipur lone Rajya Sabha MP Maharaja Sanajaoba Leishemba today urged the Central government to explore the possibility of reclaiming Kabaw Valley from Myanmar or ensuring compensation payments to Manipur, citing historical injustice.
Speaking in the Rajya Sabha, he strongly criticised former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru for handing over Kabaw Valley, a fertile landmass of nearly 22,210 sq. km to Burma (now Myanmar) on March 3, 1953, without parliamentary approval or state endorsement.
He recalled that Kabaw Valley had been part of the Manipur kingdom since 1450 AD and that Nehru’s decision ignored historical treaties, including the Treaty of Yandaboo (1826) and the Kabaw Valley Agreement (1834).
As per the 1834 agreement, Burma had been paying 500 Sicca Rupees per month as compensation to Manipur’s King Gambhir Singh. After Manipur merged with India in 1949, the payment continued to the Indian government until around 1953. However, after Nehru’s decision to cede the valley, compensation payments stopped.
Sanajaoba Leishemba Calls for Reclaiming Kabaw Valley
“The unjust gifting of Kabaw Valley remains one of the most unfortunate events in Manipur’s history. It was done without considering the historical background, and Manipur will never forgive Nehru or the Congress party for this blunder,” Maharaja Sanajaoba Leishemba said.
He urged the Central government to take corrective measures by either reclaiming Kabaw Valley or resuming compensation payments to Manipur or the Union government.
Manipur Rajya Sabha MP, Maharaja Leishemba Sanajaoba has also urged upon the Centre to make suitable provisions to uplift the Socio-Economic, Cultural and Political status of Manipur. Addressing the house on February 11, during the Zero Hour in the Rajya Sabha, Maharaja Leishemba demanded for proper implementation of the Manipur Merger Agreement 1949, specially the last paragraph of Article VIII.
