The Supreme Court on Tuesday banned the transportation of coal in Meghalaya. The apex court’s directive comes following a petition by a group of social activists in this regard.
The transportation was a subject of intense scrutiny as coal from Meghalaya was still being transported although the National Green Tribunal had banned mining in the state back in 2014.
The question being asked was how could there be so much coal seen lying openly in Meghalaya unless the ban was being flouted and illegal mining was going on unabated.
The next hearing on re-opening of coal mines has been postponed to February 19. The Supreme Court also pulled up the Meghalaya government on the issue.
