Nagaland: Naga Students Federation Urges Govt to Upgrade Khelhoshe Polytechnic into Engineering College

The Naga Students Federation (NSF) has urged the Nagaland government to upgrade Khelhoshe Polytechnic, Atoizu (KPA), into a full-fledged engineering college.

In a memorandum submitted to Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, the NSF highlighted the pressing need for technical education within the state, stressing that the absence of an engineering college in Nagaland has forced thousands of students to seek admissions outside, causing financial strain on families and leading to brain drain.

Established in 1972, Khelhoshe Polytechnic has produced skilled professionals contributing to various government and private sectors in Nagaland. However, the institute remains restricted to diploma-level education, limiting opportunities for students seeking higher technical studies within the state.

The NSF reminded the government that in a Cabinet meeting on December 17, 2007, the state had approved the introduction of a Civil Engineering Degree course at KPA and passed a resolution to upgrade it to an engineering college. However, despite the approval, the upgradation has not materialised even after more than a decade.

The memorandum pointed out that the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) allows polytechnic institutions that have existed for at least five years to be upgraded into engineering colleges. With over five decades of legacy, Khelhoshe Polytechnic meets all eligibility criteria for upgradation. The NSF highlighted that the existing infrastructure and faculty at KPA provide a strong foundation for the transition, requiring only minimal additional investment.

The federation urged the Chief Minister to take immediate steps to implement the already approved upgradation of KPA. They asserted that transforming KPA into an engineering college is not just an academic necessity but a strategic move crucial for the state’s progress.
