‘No Separate Administration, No Free Movement in Kuki-Zo Areas: Village Volunteers

First Published: 5th March, 2025 20:30 IST

“Our demand for a Separate Administration is necessary for our survival”, one of the Volunteers said

In a resolute declaration, the Village Volunteers – Eastern Zone have issued a strong warning against any attempts to enter Kuki-Zo areas without first addressing the longstanding demand for a Separate Administration or Union Territory with a legislature for the Kuki-Zo people.

This statement comes in direct response to the Federation of Civil Society (FOCS)—a valley-based civil organization—announcing its plan to march toward the hill districts on March 8. The Village Volunteers have made it unequivocally clear that there will be no free movement in Kuki-Zo territories until justice is served and a separate governing structure is established.

Denouncing the relentless injustices, inhumane atrocities, and systematic oppression endured by the Kuki-Zo people, the Village Volunteers have asserted that such sufferings cannot be disregarded under the guise of peace marches. They have categorically stated that those responsible for past violence, those who have denied the rights of the Kuki-Zo people, and those complicit in oppression will not be granted free passage into their lands.

“Our demand for a Separate Administration is not just a political aspiration—it is a necessity for our survival, security, and dignity,” the volunteers said.

The group has urged all relevant authorities to acknowledge the deep-seated grievances and legitimate demands of the Kuki-Zo people. They have further cautioned that any individual or organization attempting to negotiate or reconcile with perpetrators through the government before the establishment of a Separate Administration/UT will face severe consequences.

The statement emphasizes that the Kuki-Zo people have endured decades of marginalization, discrimination, and violence, and any attempt to downplay their struggle will not be tolerated. The group further called upon the international community, human rights organizations, and all justice-seeking entities to take note of the systematic persecution of the Kuki-Zo people and their rightful demand for self-governance.

Reaffirming their unwavering stand, the Village Volunteers have made it clear that any attempt to violate their territorial rights or forcibly enter Kuki-Zo areas will be met with strong resistance.
