Kaziranga National Park in Assam witnessed a historic moment with the launch of India’s first mobile clinic, ‘Hathi Sewa’, dedicated to elephants.
The clinic to be operated by the NGO Wildlife SOS, aims to provide medical care to captive elephants across the country.
The mobile clinic was inaugurated during a health and treatment camp for elephants at Kaziranga, organized in collaboration with the Assam Forest Department. The initiative is part of Wildlife SOS’ broader Begging Elephant Campaign, which seeks to offer medical aid to exploited captive elephants, including those used for street begging.
According to Wildlife SOS, an expert team of veterinarians and caregivers will treat elephants suffering from various ailments such as foot infections, joint pain, lameness, and gastrointestinal diseases. Special attention will be given to blind and handicapped elephants that require immediate intervention.
Kartick Satyanarayan, Co-founder and CEO of Wildlife SOS expressed pride in launching this first-of-its-kind initiative. “With this mobile clinic, we aim to reach elephants across India that are in dire need of medical care,” he said. Geeta Seshamani, Co-founder and Secretary of Wildlife SOS highlighted the urgent need for such a facility, stating that many captive elephants suffer due to lack of treatment and often die prematurely.
Kaziranga National Park Director Sonali Ghosh called the launch a “remarkable moment”, emphasizing its significance in elephant conservation. The mobile clinic will soon extend its services to Manas National Park, another crucial elephant reserve in Assam.
This initiative marks a crucial step toward improving the welfare of India’s captive elephants, ensuring they receive the medical attention they deserve.”
