However, the situation remains critical as highly inflammable gas continues to leak from the damaged TNGCL pipeline.
A major fire disaster was narrowly avoided in Agartala’s densely populated Maharajganja Bazaar on Saturday afternoon, thanks to the swift response of the Tripura Fire and Emergency Services. The fire broke out in an underground gas pipeline near the busy market, posing a severe threat to life and property.
Firefighters, led by team leader Manoj Debbarma from the Maharajganja fire station, rushed to the scene with four fire engines and worked relentlessly to bring the blaze under control. After a prolonged effort, they managed to extinguish the flames. However, the situation remains critical as highly inflammable gas continues to leak from the damaged Tripura Natural Gas Company Limited (TNGCL) pipeline.
Debbarma warned that the risk of re-ignition remains high due to the rapid escape of gas. Given the volatile situation, the fire brigade has maintained its presence in the area to prevent any further flare-ups. Preliminary investigations suggest that the pipeline may have been damaged due to ongoing excavation work nearby. TNGCL officials arrived at the scene but are awaiting the stoppage of the gas flow before initiating repairs.
To prevent casualties, authorities have taken strict precautionary measures. A large contingent of security forces has been deployed, and vehicle movement in the area has been temporarily restricted to avoid potential accidents. Meanwhile, shopkeepers and residents have expressed deep concern over their safety, urging authorities to expedite repairs and implement stronger preventive measures to avoid such incidents in the future.
