Meghalaya TMC Leader Mukul Sangma Says VPP’s Rise Signals Public Discontent, Slams State Government Over Unemployment Crisis

Sangma criticized state govt for its failure to tackle unemployment, accusing it of neglecting its basic duty to fill vacant government posts.

Trinamool Congress (TMC) Meghalaya Parliamentary Party leader and Leader of the Opposition, Mukul Sangma, has described the recent Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) and Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) elections as a clear manifestation of public sentiment. He asserted that the rise of the Voice of the People Party (VPP) was inevitable, given the prevailing political dynamics in the state.

“For me, it is nothing surprising. It was palpable, it was foreseeable, and it is just a reflection of the pulse of the people,” Sangma stated.

He said, “Any election outcome is a reflection of what the people are speaking. People have spoken, you have seen it, and it’s before us. I take this opportunity to congratulate all parties whose candidates emerged victorious. For those who failed to win, my message is simple—do your homework, work harder, and reconnect with the people.”

With the BJP and Congress failing to secure a single seat in the KHADC elections and the National People’s Party (NPP) managing only four, Sangma highlighted that the results were a serious indictment of the ruling party’s governance.

When asked whether the VPP’s rise threatened traditional parties, he remarked, “That question is for their leaders to answer. However, the most important takeaway from this election is that political dynamics are shifting—not just in Meghalaya, but across the region and the country. This is the first time Congress has drawn a blank, and other parties have faced a similar fate. What makes this significant is that this was a district council election conducted while the government of the day is in power. Unlike simultaneous Assembly and KHADC elections, this was specifically to constitute the two Autonomous District Councils.”

Sangma also criticized the state government for its failure to tackle unemployment, accusing it of neglecting its basic duty to fill vacant government posts. He pointed out that thousands of government jobs remain unfilled, with positions left vacant due to retirement, promotion, or the untimely death of employees. Referring to a recent State Security Commission meeting, Sangma recalled that a decision was made to fill all vacancies in the police department by March.

However, he expressed doubt over whether the government would fulfill its commitment, highlighting a recurring pattern where authorities make promises but fail to deliver meaningful results.

Sangma also criticised the government’s lack of support for entrepreneurship, stressing Meghalaya’s market potential. He urged the government to create employment opportunities, condemning its neglect of job creation. “The government must do justice to the people’s aspirations,” he asserted.
