Till February 27, 705 arms, 9,743 ammunition and 320 explosives have been surrendered. Governor had made the appeal on February 20, 2025.
The brief lull in Manipur has been shattered as a fresh incident of firing has been reported from the state.
As per sources, armed miscreants from the Wakan Hill Range in Kangpokpi opened fire at devotees and the priest who were at Kongba Maru temple in Imphal East to clean the place for worship.
The devotees and priest had received security clearance from the Imphal East District Commissioner, SP, and the Officer In Charge of the Sagolmang Police Station. However, armed miscreants opened fire on them when they were cleaning the temple under the watch of Manipur Police and CRPF personnel.
K Rajen, a member of the Kongba Maru Temple committee, who was among those present at the Kongba Maru Temple when the firing took place, stated that 7 to 8 live rounds were fired by miscreants from the Wakan Hill Range, despite the presence of security forces.
Rajen has urged Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla to take swift measures against those attacking innocent people. He has set forth a deadline of two days for the Governor to show concrete results, adding that if no action is taken, the devotees will consider the Governor’s assurances as unfulfilled.
The firing incident happened at a time when armed individuals are surrendering their illegal weapons responding to Governor Bhalla’s call to return all weapons possessed illegally by anyone in Manipur.
Meanwhile, Governor Bhalla today announced an extension of the arms surrender deadline until March 6, 2025, urging those still in possession of weapons to lay them down.
“This is the last opportunity for everyone to contribute to peace, communal harmony, and the security of our society. We once again urge those still in possession of such arms to surrender them without fear of prosecution,” the Governor stated.
Till February 27, 705 arms, 9,743 ammunition and 320 explosives have been surrendered.
Governor Bhalla had made the appeal on February 20, 2025.
