The event was marked by a spirit of unity and peace, with various community members, local leaders, and supporters taking part in the procession.

The Indigenous Faith and Cultural Society of Arunachal Pradesh (IFCSAP) on Thursday organized a Sadbhavana Rally at Likabali in Lower Siang district in support of the Arunachal Pradesh Freedom of Religion Act 1978.

Participants gathered expressing solidarity for the preservation of the Act and its provisions.

The event was marked by a spirit of unity and peace, with various community members, local leaders, and supporters taking part in the procession.

The rally aimed to raise awareness about the importance of the APFRA 1978 in protecting the rights and interests of the indigenous communities of Arunachal Pradesh.

Earlier, on February 17, Christians in Arunachal Pradesh staged an eight-hour hunger strike in protest against the state government’s move to implement the Arunachal Pradesh Freedom of Religion Act (APFRA), 1978.

As per the ACF, over 7000 people gathered in Itanagar for the hunger strike while demanding for the repeal of the Act and calling it discriminatory and unconstitutional.

They claimed that APFRA violates the freedom of accepting faith and religious belief.

The protest came in amid the Arunachal Pradesh government’s decision to implement the law which had remained dormant for decades, following a directive from the Gauhati High Court in September last year.

Noteworthy is that the APFRA was originally introduced to prevent cases of forced religious conversions, while prescribing strict penalties including prison upto two years and a fine of Rs 10,000 for violations.
