Umrangso Coal Mine Tragedy: All Bodies Recovered as 5 More Retrieved Today After 45 Days

The 5 remaining bodies of the trapped miners at the Umrangso coal mine tragedy site have been recovered today, 45 days after the tragic incident bringing the total to 9.
With this, all the miners who were trapped in the January 6 coal mine disaster in Kalamati, Umrangso, have now been accounted for.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed the development in a tweet, stating that the bodies were brought up from the mine shaft, and the process of identification has begun.
“Today, the dewatering of the Umrangso mines was completed to a level where retrieval operations could be launched. The mortal remains of the remaining 5 miners have been recovered and brought up from the mine shaft. The process to identify the remains has been initiated,” CM Sarma posted on X.
The tragic incident occurred on January 6 when a flooded rat-hole coal mine in Kalamati, Umrangso, trapped 9 workers inside.
Initially, 4 bodies were recovered, and with today’s recovery, the toll has now risen to 5. Rescue teams are still working tirelessly to locate and retrieve the remaining miners.
Earlier, the Assam Cabinet has announced Rs 10 lakh ex gratia to the next of kin of the four deceased miners, while an additional Rs 10 lakh each will be given to the families of the five miners, irrespective of whether they are found alive or dead.
An SIT and a Judicial Enquiry Commission headed by Justice Anima Hazarika, former Judge of Gauhati High Court were formed to investigate the rat-hole mine tragedy.
