Assam Now Has India’s 2nd Highest Number of National Parks with the Addition of Sikhna Jwhwlao

Once officially declared, Sikhna Jwhwlao National Park is expected to play a key role in wildlife conservation, tourism, and ecological balance in the Northeast.

The Assam government has approved the creation of Sikhna Jwhwlao National Park, marking it as the state’s 8th national park. With this addition, Assam now has the second-highest number of national parks in India, after Madhya Pradesh, which has 11 national parks.

The Sikhna Jwhwlao Reserve Forest, located between Raimona and Manas National Parks in Kokrajhar and Chirang districts, will play a key role in regional conservation efforts. Spanning 316.29 square kilometers, the newly approved national park will serve as a crucial ecological corridor, connecting Raimona National Park in Assam, Buxa Tiger Reserve in West Bengal, and Phibsoo Wildlife Sanctuary in Bhutan.

The approval is a major step towards expanding protected areas, preserving wildlife habitats, and promoting eco-tourism in the region.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “We recently approved Assam’s 8th National Park, Sikhna Jwhwlao National Park. This Park, spread over 316 Sq. Km is part of the Greater Manas Conservation Landscape and connects 4 other parks in the region. With this, Assam now has the 2nd highest National Parks in the country.”
