The Gauhati High Court today granted interim anticipatory bail protection to YouTuber Ashish Chanchalani in connection with an FIR filed against him by the Guwahati Police alleging that Chanchalani made obscene and controversial remarks during a recent episode of the YouTube show India’s Got Latent.

However, Justice Mridul Kumar Kalita, while granting the interim protection, directed Chanchalani to appear before the Investigating Officer within 10 days.

The matter has been adjourned for a final hearing on March 7, and the court has also asked for the case diary to be presented for review.

This development comes on the same day as the Supreme Court granted interim protection from arrest to another YouTuber, Ranveer Allahabadia in connection with similar FIRs filed in Mumbai, Guwahati, and Jaipur over accusations of obscenity in the same show.

Despite granting bail, Justice Surya Kant of the Supreme Court severely criticised Allahabadia, describing his language as “dirty” and “perverted” during the hearing.

The FIR was filed on February 12 based on a complaint by Alok Boruah, who accuses Chanchlani, along with other panellists from the show including Jaspreet Singh, Apoorva Mukhija, Ranveer Allahabadia, Samay Raina, and others, of promoting obscenity and engaging in sexually explicit discussions on the show.

Appearing before the High Court, Senior Counsel Diganta Das, representing Chanchlani along with Advocate Joyraj Borah, argued that the YouTuber was innocent and had no involvement in making the comments as alleged in the FIR.

Chanchlani’s defense states that the remarks in question were made by one of the guest panellists, Ranveer Allahabadia, and that Chanchlani had no role, authority, or involvement in editing or post-production of the episode.

His legal team also contends that he did not endorse or support the remarks in any way, and should not be held responsible for the actions of others on the show.

With the final hearing set for March 7, the case continues to attract attention due to the high-profile nature of the individuals involved.

While Chanchlani has been granted interim bail protection, the outcome of this case could have implications on the responsibility of content creators for comments made during their shows.
