In a historic first anywhere in the country, the Himanta Biswa-led Assam Government will hold its Budget Session of the Assam Legislative Assembly in Kokrajhar today instead of holding it in the Assam Assembly building located next to the Assam Secretariat in capital Dispur.
The session is taking place at the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) assembly in Kokrajhar. Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya is scheduled to address the House, setting the stage for key discussions.
Following the Governor’s address, the Assembly will table government bills and ordinances. The session will also include the presentation of the Supplementary Demands for Grants and the supplementary allocations for the financial year 2024-25.
A significant highlight of the session will be a special discussion under the Speaker’s Initiative Session, focusing on the socio-economic and overall development of areas covered under the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution.
The first day’s proceedings will conclude with a motion of thanks on the Governor’s address. The Assembly will be adjourned on February 18, with the next phase resuming in Guwahati on February 19, beginning with the Question Hour.
The Budget Session in Kokrajhar comes in the backdrop of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah have reaffirmed their commitment to empowering the Bodo community and preserving their cultural heritage. Finance Minister Ajanta Neog will present the Assam Budget for 2025-26 on March 10. The session is expected to continue until March 25.
