The students also tried to generate awareness by putting up a display of posters on various issues related to the environment.
In a remarkable display of community spirit and environmental responsibility, Class 11 students of Ascent Academy Senior Secondary School, Beltola joined forces with a group of conscious local citizens to clean up Dighalipukhuri and make its compound free of plastic waste.
This citizen-led initiative, started in November 2024 by common citizens and supported by Ascent Academy Senior Secondary School, aims to raise awareness about the importance of preserving this historic waterbody and reducing plastic waste.
The clean-up drive primarily aimed to remove all kinds of plastic wastes and other pollutants that were thrown away or left behind by the visitors in and around this precious water body. The students also tried to generate awareness by putting up a display of posters on various issues related to the environment.
Milin Dutta, a transgender activist along with a few local residents and volunteers of the area had collected 500 kgs of plastic waste from the Dighalipukhuri compound over the last 12 Sunday cleaning drives. The active participation today by the students of Ascent Academy have boosted their resolve to continue with this noble initiative.
“Our students’ enthusiastic participation in this Dighalipukhuri Cleaning drive should hopefully be a trend-setting example for students of other schools to come forward and take this initiative to its logical end”, said Sakina Rashid Hazarika, Director of Ascent Academy.
It may be mentioned here that Ascent Academy has also contributed towards the purchase of environment-friendly dustbins and other tools and materials required by the Citizens’ team for their continuous and ambitious initiative to clean the Dighalipukhuri.
