Meghalaya Minister Marcuise N Marak Dismisses GNLA Regrouping Claims

He emphasised that with improved infrastructure and community resistance, any resurgence of the GNLA is highly unlikely.

Meghalaya Minister Marcuise N Marak has dismissed speculations about the possible regrouping of the Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA), asserting that there is no evidence of such activities. Acknowledging Williamnagar’s history as a former militancy stronghold, Marak highlighted the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government’s efforts to promote stability and development in the region.

Addressing recent rumours, Marak stated, “There’s no such news now; it was only some rumours about GNLA regrouping. There’s no such regrouping in practical terms.” He emphasised that with improved infrastructure and community resistance, any resurgence of the GNLA is highly unlikely.

The minister pointed out that most ex-GNLA cadres have been rehabilitated through government schemes such as the CM Elevate program. These initiatives provide financial aid, employment opportunities, and skill development to prevent the youth from turning to militancy.

Comparing the current scenario with the past, Marak noted that previously, poor connectivity in remote areas had allowed militant groups to operate with ease. “When GNLA and ANVC were active, there were no proper roads, and crossing the Simsang River required boats. But now, with numerous bridges and roads, even the remotest villages are connected. Villagers no longer support such groups, and if anyone attempts to revive them, the government will take action,” he asserted.

Marak, who also serves as the MDA government’s spokesperson, stressed the importance of empowering the youth through employment and education. “Most of the youth are educated now. The government is running programs like CM Elevate, MRLS, Focus, and Focus Plus to provide them with opportunities,” he said.

Additionally, the district administration and block development officers have been conducting awareness programs to encourage young people to apply for police recruitment. Marak highlighted the transparency in recruitment processes, which has increased participation and trust among job seekers. “Even Home Guards recruitment is happening, and many are coming forward,” he added.

To further guide the youth, the government has been organising sensitisation programs on appearing for District Selection Board exams. “We are assisting them at every level, from job applications to contract work registration. Even at the ground level, offices are helping them secure employment. There are no youth now who are disgruntled or considering militancy. Most are striving to build a better future,” Marak affirmed.

The GNLA, once a major security threat in Meghalaya, was effectively dismantled following the death of its leader, Sohan D. Shira, in 2018. Shira, who was Meghalaya’s most wanted militant, was killed in an encounter with police commandos at Achakpek near Dobu in East Garo Hills.

His death led to the surrender of several GNLA cadres, marking the beginning of a period of peace in the Garo Hills. With the government’s continued focus on infrastructure, employment, and youth development, Marak expressed confidence that the region will remain peaceful and free from militant influence.
