Citizen Action Party Demands Urgent Inquiry into Alleged Medical Negligence at STNM Hospital

The party urged the Health Department to take immediate corrective measures to restore confidence in state-run healthcare institutions.
The Citizen Action Party-Sikkim (CAP) has raised serious concerns over the alleged medical negligence that led to the death of Ram Kumari Rai during a gallbladder surgery at STNM Sochyagang Hospital on February 5.
In response, CAP has formally submitted a letter to the Health & Family Welfare Department, demanding a comprehensive departmental inquiry into the incident.
According to a press release issued by the party, Rai’s tragic demise is not an isolated case but part of a disturbing trend of medical oversights at the hospital. CAP highlighted past instances of negligence, including a shocking case where surgical forceps were found inside a patient’s abdomen 12 years after an appendix surgery. These incidents, the party claims, reflect deep-rooted systemic issues within the state’s healthcare sector.
A delegation led by CAP leaders met with health officials, stressing that repeated cases of medical negligence have severely eroded public trust in government hospitals. The party urged the Health Department to take immediate corrective measures to restore confidence in state-run healthcare institutions.
In their memorandum, CAP outlined four key demands:
- Comprehensive Inquiry – A thorough investigation into cases of medical negligence to ensure accountability and transparency.
- Financial Relief for Patients – Measures to prevent patients from being forced to seek expensive private healthcare outside the state due to fear of negligence in government facilities.
- Strengthened Patient Safety Measures – Implementation of stricter medical protocols, regular audits, and enhanced staff training to prevent similar incidents in the future.
- Elimination of External Influence in Medical Institutions – The party alleged political interference in hospital operations, leading to unnecessary referrals to private hospitals outside Sikkim, thereby weakening the state’s healthcare system.
Speaking on behalf of the party, CAP leaders asserted that the government must take urgent steps to address public concerns and ensure accountability in the healthcare sector. They reaffirmed their commitment to supporting initiatives aimed at improving medical standards in Sikkim.
CAP has urged authorities to act swiftly to restore faith in the state’s healthcare institutions.
