The Assam Police has registered a case against popular YouTubers-Ranveer Allahbadia (Beer Biceps), Ashish Chanchlani, Samay Raina, Apoorva Makhija, Jaspreet Singh and others for allegedly promoting obscenity on a recent episode of the YouTube show India’s Got Latent.
The controversy erupted after a clip from the show went viral, where Ranveer Allahbadia, during the show, asked a shocking question to a contestant:”Would you rather watch your parents have sex for the rest of your life, or would you join in once and stop it forever?”
The remark sent shockwaves across social media, with users slamming the content as vulgar and inappropriate.
Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma said that a case has been registered against them for allegedly promoting obscenity and making sexually explicit remarks and an investigation is underway.
The Guwahati Crime Branch has officially registered a case under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 2023, the IT Act 2000, the Cinematograph Act 1952, and the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act 1986.
Guwahati Joint Police Commissioner Ankur Jain stated said, “We have registered an FIR against these YouTubers for making obscene comments about family relationships. Will take the strictest action possible.”
Additionally, another complaint was filed against Allahbadia, leading Mumbai Police to visit the sets of the show in Khar on Monday.
The explicit conversation did not just provoke social media users but also drew criticism from politicians.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis hinted at action, stating,”Everyone has freedom of speech, but our freedom ends when we encroach upon the freedom of others.”
NHRC’s Warning to Streaming Platforms
Following public outrage, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) intervened, urging video-streaming platforms like YouTube, Instagram, and Facebook to remove the offensive content. In an official statement, the NHRC highlighted concerns over the impact such material could have on women and children, calling it a “grave threat to safety and dignity.”
Ranveer Allahbadia’s Apology – ‘Comedy Isn’t My Forte’
Following the massive backlash, Ranveer Allahbadia issued a public apology, acknowledging his lapse in judgment.
“My comment wasn’t just inappropriate it wasn’t even funny. Comedy is not my forte. I’m not here to justify anything, just to apologize. The podcast is watched by people of all ages, and I don’t take that responsibility lightly. Family is the last thing I would ever disrespect,” he said in a video statement.
Despite his apology, legal proceedings are underway, and the possibility of stricter regulations on digital content looms large.
