Rare Fossils Stolen in Meghalaya: Village Chiefs Blame GSI for Unauthorized Exploration Activities

First Published: 7th February, 2025 21:30 IST

Village chiefs from Tolegre, Jadigindam, Paromgre, Emangre, Asakgre, Dabalgre, and Nokatgre have alleged unauthorised exploration by the GSI

The theft of a rare 35-40 million-year-old fossil from Tolegre, Meghalaya, has led to accusations against the Geological Survey of India (GSI) by Nokmas from seven surrounding villages. Village chiefs from Tolegre, Jadigindam, Paromgre, Emangre, Asakgre, Dabalgre, and Nokatgre have alleged unauthorised exploration by the GSI, raising concerns about the disappearance of valuable fossils.

In an emergency meeting last Saturday, the Nokmas discussed measures to prevent further incidents. The controversy escalated after a partially fossilised jaw and teeth, believed to belong to a whale ancestor, were reported missing on 27 January.

The GSI had ceased exploration in Tolegre months ago following strong opposition from villagers. With access to the cave restricted, the agency redirected its focus elsewhere. However, the recent fossil theft has reignited tensions, with local leaders expressing fears of further losses.

Chief Minister Conrad Sangma acknowledged the complexities of the issue, noting that the land falls under the jurisdiction of the Aking and Nokmas, limiting state intervention.

He stated that the government had taken steps to secure the area by restricting access and promoting local cooperation to aid geological studies.

Despite the accusations, the GSI remains open to resuming its activities if cooperation is extended by both the local community and the state government. The incident has highlighted the challenges of balancing scientific exploration with local governance and heritage protection.
