Meghalaya Schools Level Up! Robotics and AI to Be Part of Curriculum

First Published: 31st January, 2025 18:42 IST

With this visionary step, Meghalaya is setting the stage for a tech-powered educational revolution.

Imagine a classroom where students do not just memorise formulas but build robots, code Artificial Intelligence (AI) models, and explore the future of technology. Well, this will soon become a reality in Meghalaya.

In a bold and futuristic move, the Meghalaya government is set to introduce Robotics, AI and emerging technologies into the school curriculum, ensuring students are future-ready in a rapidly evolving digital world.

Speaking exclusively to Northeast Live, Chief Secretary of Meghalaya, D.P. Wahlang said that alongside AI and robotics, students will also be introduced to the Internet of Things (IoT) and new language learning programs, a move that promises to revolutionise the way young minds learn and interact with technology.

He said that this initiative comes as part of an ongoing revision of the National Curriculum Framework (NCF) and the State Curriculum Framework (SCF), aligning Meghalaya’s education system with national and global advancements.

“The school curriculum is being revised. And with the revision of the school curriculum, these new fields will enter. We are talking about robotics, AI, IoT, and new language learning. All these will be part of the curriculum. I am sure that the students will benefit. We are also in touch with the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) and we will incorporate whatever NCRT will have in the curriculum and we will add more to that to make it more dynamic,” said D.P. Wahlang.

Wahlang said that it does not stop at theory. Recognising the need for hands-on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education, the government has instructed the Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) project director to establish STEM labs in at least 100 schools.

Wahlang stressed that while textbooks lay the foundation, it is practical exposure that sparks innovation, critical thinking, and scientific curiosity.

By blending traditional learning with cutting-edge technology, Meghalaya is not just preparing students for exams but equipping them for the future where AI, robotics, and automation will define career landscapes.

Wahlang said, “Class 9 students learning coding on their own with, of course, guidance from the teachers is path-breaking. Usually, coding is done at the undergraduate level but now at Class 9 they are doing it on their own and they are developing robotics. They are developing state-of-the-art technology at the school level. So this will leapfrog and will ensure that the students go to a different level altogether.”

With this visionary step, Meghalaya is setting the stage for a tech-powered educational revolution.
