The much-anticipated tripartite talks on Manipur’s new district creation issue between the Government of India, the Government of Manipur, and the United Naga Council (UNC) are scheduled to take place on January 30 at the DC Conference Hall in Senapati, Manipur.

In a letter sent on January 24, the Ministry of Home Affairs invited the President of the United Naga Council to attend the meeting. The letter, signed by A.K. Mishra, Advisor (North East), urged the UNC to bring along its team for the discussions.

Sources from the UNC confirmed that the delegation will likely include the council’s executives, working committee members, and the presidents of key affiliated organizations such as the All Naga Students’ Association, Manipur (ANSAM), the Naga Women’s Union, and the Naga People’s Organization (NPO).

However, the representatives from the Government of India and the Government of Manipur who will participate in the talks have not yet been disclosed.

The talks are part of an ongoing dialogue that resumed on October 11, 2024, in New Delhi after a long hiatus. The issue dates back to December 8, 2016, when the then-Manipur government created seven new districts. In response, the UNC imposed a 139-day economic blockade along the national highways passing through Manipur. The blockade was lifted after an agreement was reached, leading to the first round of talks on March 19, 2017, followed by several subsequent rounds.
