The letter further clarified that JDU’s decision to align with the INDIA led to Mohammad Abdul Nasir’s formal placement in the opposition..

In a significant political development, the Janata Dal-United (JDU) has officially withdrawn its support from the N Biren Singh-led Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in Manipur.
This come two months after NPP had pulled out from the Biren Singh Government.

In a letter issued by Kshetrimayum Biren Singh, the president of the Manipur JDU unit, the party highlighted that during the March 2022 state elections, six JDU MLAs were elected. However, five of them subsequently defected to the BJP. The party noted that the matter of these defections is currently pending under the tenth schedule of the Constitution in the Speaker’s Tribunal.

The letter further clarified that the JDU’s decision to align with the INDI alliance led to Mohammad Abdul Nasir’s formal placement in the opposition. The party reiterated its stance against the BJP-led government in Manipur, emphasising that their lone MLA will continue to oppose the ruling coalition.

Mohammad Abdul Nasir is the lone JDU MLA in the Manipur Assembly.

In November last year, the NPP, with seven MLAs, had withdrawn its support from the BJP-led government, citing the administration’s failure to restore normalcy amid ongoing turmoil in the state. The NPP expressed deep concern over the government’s inability to resolve the crisis, marking a significant setback for the ruling NDA coalition. NPP is the second-largest ally with seven MLAs in the BJP-led NDA state government.

With both the JDU and NPP withdrawing their support, the N Biren Singh-led government faces increased scrutiny and challenges in navigating the political landscape of Manipur that has seen unrest since May 2023.
